Waffle Stitch Mittens Free Crochet Pattern. The Sugarloaf Mittens
These waffle stitch mittens work up very quickly and easily. Make a fingerless mitt or a full hand mitten, the choice is yours. The waffle stitch is most associated with blankets, and what better on a cold winters day than to feel you are wrapped up in a blanket? With a thick fold-back cuff, a waffle stitch top for extra warmth, and a flat palm for flexibility. Therefore, this pattern makes a pair of mittens which are both very functional, quick and easy to crochet, and fun to wear.

You can create a matching set with the Sugarloaf cowl and Sugarloaf hat. All three patterns are free here on my blog. Or, if you prefer, you can buy the ebook on Ravelry and get a convenient PDF download with all three patterns included.

Sizes
This mittens pattern comes in 3 sizes. Size 1 is a tween or teen size, also used by adults with narrow hands. The second size is a standard adult size for women and men with narrower hands. Size three is generally considered a men’s size.
To get the right fit, measure the circumference of your hand across the knuckles, and select the closest size. The length is easily adjustable for a custom fit.
Mittens: 1 (2, 3)
Hand circumference:7 (8, 9) in / 18 (20.5/23) cm
Mittens designed to be worn with no ease.
Yarn requirements for waffle stitch mittens
Any chunky weight yarn.
Note on yarn substitutions: Chunky weight yarn can vary even more than other yarn thicknesses. Check the yarn recommends knitting needles between 6 and 8 mm – even though this is a crochet pattern, that is still a good indication that the yarn you are substituting is about the right thickness.
Cream waffle stitch mittens sample made with:
Berroco Ultra Alpaca Chunky Natural: (50% Super fine Alpaca, 50% Peruvian wool), size 5/Chunky, 131yds/120m, 3.5oz/100g per skein. Jasmine Rice color 72500:
2 skeins used for mittens, if making the full set with hat and cowl, six will be needed in total.
Alternative yarn suggestion:
BC Garn Hamelton Tweed 2: 90% wool, 10% viscose, size 5, chunky, 60 meters per 50g ball.
2-3 balls needed to make mittens, 10 balls needed to make full set of hat, cowl and mittens.
You can see the hat and cowl worked in Hamilton tweed here
Hook
Smaller hook for cuff: 6 mm (US size L/11) crochet hook (or size needed to match gauge)
larger hook for hand: 7mm (or size needed to match gauge

Construction
The Sugarloaf waffle stitch mittens are crocheted in the round, from the cuff up up. The cuff is worked, then the work is flipped inside out, to create a folds back. A thumb gusset is shaped, then the hand is worked straight. Next, the top of the mittens is finished for fingerless mittens, or continued in length, and shaped for the top with decreases for a full hand mitten. A thumb is added for full mittens.
